Overview

In the recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been exploited as a promising technology to serve as a future communication mechanism for a variety of critical missions where human operation or human intervention is risky, dangerous, impossible or critical in terms of time and cost. The flying and hovering capacity of an UAV facilitates the reliable and efficient data transmission. Moreover, the UAVs can be integrated with IoT networks is known as mobile IoT which can be controlled over internet to collect and relay the sensor data. It is expected that this integration will could offer more reliable and economical value-added services with limited infrastructure.

However, the use of overcrowded unlicensed spectrum bands is one of the main performance limiting factors. Cognitive radio (CR) technology is considered as a promising solution to address the problem of spectrum scarcity which utilizes the dynamic and opportunistic spectrum allocation. To address this issue, CR enable UAVs is imperative to exploit and operate in both licensed and unlicensed bands. The integration of UAVs and CR technology is unexplored and imposes many issues such as spectrum mobility, spectrum sharing, energy consumption, multi-UAVs cooperation, spectrum aware routing and delay. Therefore, it is an essential to conduct thorough investigation and research on the integration of UAVs and CR technology for critical mission.

The scope of this special issue is to advance the understanding of the challenges faced in integration of UAVs and CR technology and provide further awareness in the UAVs communication and networks.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

- Integration of Cognitive radio with UAVs
- Cognitive system for multi-UAV guidance
- Impact of spectrum mobility on UAV
- Multihop and D2D communication for UAVs
- Ad-hoc networking, relaying and routing of UAV communication
- IoT architecture and protocol of UAV communication
- UAV based IoT communication
- Energy efficiency UAV communication and networking
- UAV assisted public safety and emergency networks
- 5G communication for UAV
- Security and privacy issues for UAV communication
- Delay tolerant networking for cooperative UAV operation
- Design and evaluation of UAV test beds, prototypes and platform
- Game-theoretic and learning solutions for UAV communication

Submission Instructions

Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure you have carefully read the submission guidelines for EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. The complete manuscript should be submitted through the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking submission system. To ensure that you submit to the correct special issue please select the appropriate special issue in the drop-down menu upon submission. In addition, indicate within your cover letter that you wish your manuscript to be considered as part of the special issue on 'Next Generation Wireless Medical Sensor Networks (WMSNs) for IoT-based eHealth Services'. All submissions will undergo rigorous peer review and accepted articles will be published within the journal as a collection.
