Introduction Global warming, and climate change in general, is posing several challenges to human kind. The planet that we live on is not the same where our parents lived in and will not be the same that our children will inherit. Responses to climate change are slowly being put into practice, trying to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, addressing issues that endanger biodiversity, coping with effects on populations living in areas affected by coastal floods, draught and extreme heat, and mitigating effects on sectors of the economy more exposed to it, such as agriculture and tourism. Sea pollution, either through oil spills, plastic trash, or many other reasons, is also being addressed. Different knowledge areas are contributing to decrease air and sea pollution, improve shoreline defense, decrease the use of chemicals in agriculture and food chains, regulate the fishing efforts, etc. Also, ICT must take its stance for environmental sustainability and be itself more ecologically friendly, by being more energy efficient, but also by contributing to solutions that promote environmental sustainability. Objective The main goal of the Handbook of Research on ICT Technologies and Applications for Environmental Sustainability is to discuss and analyze current methodologies, techniques, and practical solutions and trends related to the use of information systems, cyber-physical systems and other ICT related technologies for environmental sustainability in a comprehensive way. The overall objectives comprise: • To discuss the importance and the challenges associated to ICT technologies and applications for environmental sustainability; • To analyze the state-of-the-art of existing ICT technologies and applications for environmental sustainability; • To propose emerging technological developments and practical solutions for ICT and applications for environmental sustainability; • To present case studies of application of ICT technologies and software applications specialized in environmental sustainability Recommended Topics 1.
