Description

The 6th IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA’2019) is the flagship annual meeting that spans the interdisciplinary fields of Data Science and Advanced Analytics. It provides a premier forum that brings together researchers, industry and government practitioners, as well as developers and users of big data solutions for exchange of ideas on the latest theoretical developments in Data Science and on the best practice for a wide range of applications.

We invite submission of papers describing innovative research on all aspects of data science and advanced analytics as well as application-oriented papers that make significant, original, and reproducible contributions to improving the practice of data science and analytics in real-world scenarios. Authors are explicitly discouraged from submitting incremental results that do not provide major advances over existing approaches.

DSAA’2019 is a dual-track conference consisting of a Research Track and an Application Track. Authors are encouraged to read the track descriptions carefully and to choose an appropriate track for their submissions.

Research Track

This track solicits the latest, original and significant contributions related to foundations and theoretical developments of Data Science and Advanced Analytics. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Foundations: Models and algorithms; asymptotic analysis; model evaluation, selection and model averaging; dimensionality reduction; strategies for handling missing data; relational/structured learning; matrix and tensor methods; deep learning; time series, spatial, or grouped data; feature/covariate selection and regularization; nonparametric Bayesian methods; computational methods for Bayesian inference; manifold learning, classification, clustering, regression; semi-supervised and unsupervised learning; personalization, security, privacy; visualization; optimization, inference and regularization; social network analysis.
  • Infrastructure: Large-scale databases; cloud computing; big-data engineering and processing; large-scale processing and distributed/parallel computing; human-machine interaction; storage, search, and retrieval.
  • Social Issues: Reproducibility and replicability; model explainability and provenance; data quality and model quality; bias and unintended consequences of algorithms and results; p-hacking and data dredging; publication bias and pre-analysis plans; trust, risk, and informed consent; data integrity and data ethics; matching, record linkage, and sharing; de-identification and re-identification; generalizability of results; causal inference.

Applications Track

This track solicits high-quality, original papers describing applications of Data Science and Advanced Analytics across various disciplines and domains, including business, government, health and medical science, physical sciences, and social sciences. The focus is on papers that would be of interest to practitioners of Data Science and Advanced Analytics, or would highlight new challenges for researchers driven by the specific needs and characteristics of application areas. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Case Studies describing work on a real-world problem using Data Science and Advanced Analytics that highlight important application domain-specific discoveries, lessons learned and/or challenges encountered from deploying real-world systems containing Data Science and Advanced Analytics approaches, data science and analysis-related ethical issues and solution approaches related to real-world applications.
  • Infrastructure, Platforms, and Tools that were built to operationalize Data Science and Advanced Analytics, including the development and deployment of new hardware and software infrastructure and its associated challenges; the development, deployment, and use of reusable libraries and software implementations; and tools that are in production and are used by end-users either in a stand-alone capacity or as part of a business process.

Submissions for both the research and applications tracks should very clearly specify the problem being solved, what methodologies were used to solve the problem, what data was used, how the results were evaluated, and how the solution is being used (ideally in production). Applying new data science methods to public data or data downloaded from competition sites (such as kaggle), without a real problem (and problem owner) will not be accepted in this track.

Special Sessions

Special sessions play a big role in promoting relevant focused areas that are not well covered in the main conference tracks, bringing together researchers, industry experts, practitioners and potential users who are interested in different aspects of data science and analytics.

We have 6 special sessions that will be part of DSAA 2019:

Submission deadlines for special sessions are the same as for the main conference.

Late-breaking Poster Session

For the first time this year, DSAA’2019 will feature a peer-reviewed poster session along with a lightning talk whose purpose is to showcase recent and early-stage research developments on topics that are of interest to both the Research and the Application tracks.

Location

DSAA’2019 will take place at the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel overlooking Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. It has easy access to the Metro subway and airports in the DC area.

Paper Length, Formatting, and Reviewing

The paper length allowed for the papers in the Research and Application tracks is a maximum of ten (10) pages, whereas the paper length allowed for the papers in the Late-breaking Poster session is a maximum of two (2) pages.

The format for both types of papers is the standard 2-column U.S. letter style IEEE Conference template. See the IEEE Proceedings Author Guidelines: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html for further information and instructions.

All submissions will be blind reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance to the conference’s topics of interest, originality, significance, and clarity. Author names and affiliations must not appear in the submissions, and bibliographic references must be adjusted to preserve author anonymity. Submissions failing to comply with paper formatting and authors anonymity will be rejected without reviews.

Because of the double-blind review process, non-anonymous papers that have been issued as technical reports or similar cannot be considered for DSAA 2019. An exception to this rule applies to arXiv papers that were published in arXiv at least a month prior to DSAA submission deadline (April 20, 2019). Authors can submit these arXiv papers to DSAA provided that the submitted paper’s title and abstract is different from the one appearing on arXiv. Papers that appear in arXiv from April 20, 2019 until the review process has ended, are not allowed.

All accepted papers and posters will be published by IEEE and will be submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The conference proceedings will be submitted for EI indexing through INSPEC by IEEE. Top quality papers accepted and presented at the conference will be selected for extension and invited to the special issues of International Journal of Data Science and Analytics (JDSA, Springer).

Submission Website

Submissions to the main conference, including Research Track and Applications Track are available from Easy Chair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dsaa2019).

Important Policies

Reproducibility: The advancement of science depends heavily on reproducibility. We strongly recommend that the authors release their code and data to the public. Authors can provide an optional two (2) page supplement at the end of their submitted paper (it needs to be in the same PDF file and start at page 11). This supplement can only be used to include (i) information necessary for reproducing the experimental results reported in the paper (e.g., various algorithmic and model parameters and configurations, hyper-parameter search spaces, details related to dataset filtering and train/test splits, software versions, detailed hardware configuration, etc.), and (ii) any data, pseudo-code and proofs that due to space limitations, could not be included in the main nine-page manuscript. A special award will be given to the paper that provides evidence for reproducibility.

Authorship: The list of authors at the time of submission is final and cannot be changed.

Dual submissions: DSAA is an archival publication venue as such submissions that have been previously published, accepted, or are currently under-review at peer-review publication venues (i.e., journals, conferences, workshops with published proceedings, etc) are not permitted. DSAA has a strict no dual submission policy.

Conflicts of interest (COI): COIs must be declared at the time of submission. COIs include employment at the same institution at the time of submission or in the past three years, collaborations during the past three years, advisor/advisee relationships, plus family and close friends.

Attendance: At least one author of each accepted paper must register in full and attend the conference to present the paper.
